Glossybox – October 2016

Yes, I know I’m months behind, but I’m a busy gal so just DEAL WITH IT. Okay…..sorry for that outburst…. anyway….October’s Glossybox was created by Estee Lalonde – a beauty and lifestyle vlogger with a blog that is literally to die for. She’s chosen products that she believes not only perform, but help you feel good on the inside, too.

You guys will know that I have such a love/hate relationship with Glossybox – I think I prefer it to the Birchboxes I review over on the All Subscriptions Boxes website… not necessarily due to product performance, but more because I just feel like I have a sort of loyalty to Glossybox. I’ve been purchasing it constantly for four years now so it would just seem so weird to NOT receive it every month!

This month saw two lip products which unfortunately enhanced the ‘hate’ side of my Glossybox love story – Trifle Cosmetics Lip Parfait Buttery Lip Cream and Universal Beauty Cosmetics Secret Flush Soothing Cream Blusher and Lip Stain Duo.
Truffle Cosmetics Lip Parfait Buttery Lip Cream is certainly buttery – it glides on your lips well and has a creamy matte sort of finish. It does keep my lips hydrated – probably thanks to the vitamin E packed inside – but I unfortunately am not obsessed with the overall lipstick itself. It just didn’t sit well on my lips – it clings to every single imperfection in your lips, so highlights any dryness or flakiness – not good in the cold months. I didn’t like the packaging – the design is great, but its made from cardboard. For someone as clumsy as me, the thought of a cardboard lipstick that would get ruined with the smallest water spillage is a disaster waiting to happen. The colour wasn’t overly anything special in my opinion either – just your standard nude like 2834047 other lipsticks from Glossybox. *Sigh*.

The second lip product I received was Universal Beauty Cosmetics Secret Flush Soothing Cream Blusher and Lip Stain Duo. As I literally never wear blusher, I’ve been using this solely as a lip stain, and I have to say it makes a great everyday handbag staple – especially to give your lips a healthy pop of colour in the cold months without having to layer on a thick lipstick. Theres a hell of a lot of product in the tube, too, meaning that at just £15 this is pretty good value. The only disadvantage to this product is that it doesn’t fit in my lipstick holder due to the shape of the packaging – bummer!

Nuxe is a brand that seems to keep popping up in beauty boxes – something I’m definitely not going to complain about! I love Nuxe’s products – they’re good quality and a little bit more luxe than other brands. This month I received the shimmering version of their dry oil – just look how pretty it is! I’ve owned and used Nuxe’s Dry Oil Huile Prodigieuse before – it’s a really hydrating multi use oil – use it on your hair, face and body – anywhere that needs a more intense hydration. This shimmering oil is the exact same but with flecks of gold – making it look fab over a tan on your legs, or perfect as a base under a dewy makeup look.

Oh I do love a good exfoliating product – so you can only imagine my pure delight when I opened my box and found a Bee Good Honey and Camelina Facial Exfoliator! It’s actually a pretty decent exfoliator, and I’ve found myself reaching for it numerous of times instead of my long term fave Tea Tree Exfoliator from The Body Shop. It’s not overly gritty or harsh, meaning it is a good choice for sensitive skin, but it still manages to buff, smooth and calm your skin all the whilst getting rid of those dead skin cells. It doesn’t dry out your skin either. I just don’t have a bad word to say about this product – I would definitely recommend it!

The last product I have to show you has received many a mixed review onlinePS…Pro Miracle Pencil. For those of you who aren’t aware, this is Primark’s makeup brand. Primark’s makeup seems to be a bit like marmite – you’re either gonna love it or hate it. Some people think it’s cheeky of Glossybox to include a product worth just £2 in the box, however I have to disagree. Let’s focus on quality, not price! It’s actually a pretty decent little concealing pencil – whilst I don’t use it to conceal spots and such like on my skin, it works well to outline lips, sharpen up your brow game and be a more subtle alternative to using white liner on your bottom waterline. For £2 you just can’t complain about the functionality and quality of the product – stop being greedy and appreciate the product for what it is!

One of the most interesting elements of this month’s Glossybox, was the additional sixth mystery product. In an unbranded, plain white bottle was a travel size shampoo – meaning you can test the product without having any prejudices from the brand name or packaging (which seemingly would have been helpful for all those slagging off the Primark makeup as I discussed above!). I think this is a fantastic idea – I would love for Glossybox to do some more mystery products like this. However, would brands be confident enough in their products to trust that it would perform without the brand name on show? That’s a whole other issue I could ramble on about for a whole post!

So, anyway, what did I think of said mystery shampoo?……. *drumroll pls*….. I guessed it correctly. Straight away. From the smell. SPOILER ALERT – it was Head & Shoulders! Head & Shoulders has always had a strong smell in my opinion – it smells very chemically and growing up using head and shoulders means I can smell it from a mile off. I unfortunately am not that impressed with the shampoo – I stopped using Head & Shoulders a good few years ago as I discovered it was actually making my hair greasy much more quickly than other shampoos. The shampoo had the exact same affect on my hair this time round, too – even before I knew the brand!

Overall, I have to say I am of mixed opinions on this month’s box. Whilst I loved the dry oil, exfoliator and concealer pencil, the two lip products and the shampoo aren’t new faves. I guess I’ll have to just accept this love/hate relationship I’ve got going on!
