Birchbox at Selfridges

So, whilst in London a few weekends ago I dragged Taylor to Oxford Street with the intention of getting one thing – a DIY Birchbox from Selfridges.

I’ve always been a fan of beauty boxes and made the difficult decision over a year and a half ago to subscribe to Glossybox. I chose Glossybox originally as I thought it had more brands that I liked, and I thought their website was really girly, yet clean and minimalistic. I’d heard of Birchbox and known people that had been subscribed in the past, yet a gut instinct meant I chose not to go with them.

However, now having a little more disposable income, and falling in love with my monthly Glossybox, I had been thinking about getting another monthly box of some sort. That is when my Instagram became flooded with pictures of Birchbox at Selfridges. A DIY beauty box? As in, YOU pick the samples?! Sold!

So, we ventured into the busy streets of London on a sunny Saturday afternoon to find the Birchbox section in Selfridges. When there, I picked up a box, a cute little pouch and a menu, and then I bored Taylor to death whilst deciding which products to have.

You were able to choose two makeup products, and then one from each of the other sections: skincare, body care, haircare and a beauty treat.

After what probably seemed like a good few hours for my boyfriend (sorry!) I eventually chose my items and skipped happily to the till, and went on to waste a few hours wandering around Oxford Street before heading back to our hotel room.

Now I’ve had the chance to use the products, I thought I’d quickly review them.

The POREfessional by Benefit

I’ve wanted to try this for a while as it always gets such good reviews on social media. I’ve applied this as a base to a few makeup looks now and it has definitely improved the staying power and appearance of my bb cream/powder around my T zone and cheeks. I have some large pores on my cheeks which are only ever hidden under lashings of foundation, however after patting this cream onto the area, some simple powder did the trick. Excellent for days I don’t want to wear much makeup.

Overall view: Amazing! Will definitely purchase, although a tad pricey
Full size price: £24.50 for 22ml

Couture Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil in Black by Lord & Berry

I love Lord & Berry. I’ve had a few of their lip products in my Glossybox and now whenever I see or hear of their products I get so excited! I’m not a massive fan of pencil eyeliner, however, this is so soft and creamy it went on like a dream. I was actually able to create a flick – with a pencil!

Overall view: Would definitely recommend.
Full size price: £12

Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Usage Dry Oil by Nuxe

One thing you need to learn about me – I LOVE oils. I’m so glad they came into the limelight at full force over the past few years as they have made such a difference to my beauty regimes. I’m constantly putting oil on the ends of my hair to keep it soft and silky, and having quite dry skin, I’m all for a bit of hydration! I loved the fact this oil could be used on your hair, face and body. It is quite runny and probably would be better distributed in a pump type bottle, so if I had any spares I definitely would have transferred it to one. Having forgot my moisturiser the evening after I purchased the Birchbox, I had no choice but to use this oil to hydrate my skin prior to applying a full face of makeup…. and I was so surprised – it did the job! My skin didn’t flake up toward the end of the night as it normally would if I forget to moisturise – result!

Overall view: Perfect for a face oil
Full size price: £28 for 100ml

Protect & Oil by Beauty Protector  (Birchbox Exclusive)

Okay so more oil… I couldn’t help myself! This oil is much thicker in consistency so perfect to apply to the damp ends of my hair after a shower. It leaves my hair really soft and silky, and definitely helps maintain the frizz! The only downside was that I feel you have to apply quite a lot of product to get good results.
Overall view: 8/10, but there are better oils out there.
Full size price: £16 for 118ml
Deep Sleep Pillow Spray by This Works

All I can say about this is…. it WORKS! The idea is simple, spray some onto your pillows, and it helps you sleep. The bottle itself is cute, the actual sprayer is excellent quality and the scent of the product is amazing. Although I didn’t really notice any difference in myself getting sleepy, it knocked me out cold the first night I used it. I didn’t wake up once during the night, which is a rarity for me. Taylor was even an hour late out of bed that morning! (oops!) I’m not sure if it actually works or if it is more of a pyschological contributor but I’m all for anything that helps me get my much needed rest!
Overall view: Seems to do the trick, but I’m interested in exploring cheaper options.
Full size price: £16 for 75ml

Lemon and Sage Body Butter by Bliss

Let’s get one thing straight. I really dislike lemon. I hate the smell, I hate the taste and I just really think adding lemon to things straight up ruins them. Long story short – I would NEVER pick this up off the shelf. Like even if it was 10p. I chose it as it was the largest sample in the category – it is coming up to Winter and with my legs getting drier I could do with some more body butter! However, I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t smell massively of lemon and it does a good job of moisturising without leaving my legs sticky for half an hour.
Overall view: Not bad for a lemon based product!
Full size price: £22 for 200ml
So, overall, I really enjoyed the products in my Birchbox and would love for some more beauty boxes to do the whole DIY thing!
