Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella is a lighthearted, fun novel, that has since been made into a movie!
The storyline follows Emma – a clumsy young adult trying to find her feet in life. She’s not had much luck in her career choices, she has a cousin who takes the limelight and a boyfriend she’s completely in love with… or so she thinks.
The story starts with a bad business trip ending in what must be the worst way possible – a near death experience whilst in bad turbulence on a plane. She has a severe case of verbal diarrhoea and ends up spilling all of her secrets to a random guy sitting next to her. He then re-enters her life and the book follows her story from then.
I really don’t want to give too much away as I was totally gripped with this book and it was so enjoyable – I read it in three sittings! It is fast paced, and you constantly just want to find out what is going to happen next. It was also SO relatable to me – I saw so many of my traits in this young girl which was another reason why I really wanted to know how her story would end! It’s funny, reads well, and I would highly recommend this for both younger and older women.
I loved how Can You Keep A Secret? made me question my own life – at first I thought, pfft, I don’t have any secrets! This book made me realise that everyone has secrets – some people may have big, deep, dark secrets whereas others may have much smaller ones. Take me for example – I realised that I have many little secrets! Like, it is me that is normally to blame if chocolate has gone missing. It was me that used the teaspoon and put it on the side instead of washing it up. Sometimes I tell Taylor I don’t know what I want for dinner even though I reeeaally want nachos!
