Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths

No matter how much we detest it, there’s no hiding from maths. We need it in our everyday lives to manage money, time and make other important decisions. Whether it’s maths anxiety that your child struggles with or a lack of interest, we have some tips to help from a private school in Kew.

Number Games

Number crunching can be hard work and turning maths problems into games can help your child to practice their maths without even realising. You can make up your own or introduce your child to the dozens that there are online.

A Tutor

Maths can seem completely foreign and take children a while to get their head around. A tutor can help as they go at their pace and address the areas that they struggle with. For children with maths anxiety, a tutor can help them to build confidence and feel comfortable at solving problems themselves.

Create Materials Together

Children all have different learning styles. Colours help those that are visual and things like flash cards are great materials for helping them with their times tables.

Practice

Practice makes perfect. With the more that your child does at home, the better they will be at their maths. Whether that be quick fire quizzes or making up multiplication songs.

Take a Look at Their Exercise Books

Your child’s exercise books will give an idea as to how they are doing at school. You will be able to see where they are going wrong and the kind of feedback that they have been getting so that you can give them a helping hand.

Speak to Their Teacher

Teachers are pros at teaching and can give you advice on how best to support your child. They can steer you in the direction of some good teaching resources and share tips on how to explain key concepts.
